In the starting month of 2021, Andreas Flaten, a resident of Georgia, had left his position at A OK Walker Autoworks without receiving his final payment of $915. The employer, Miles Walker, was hesitant to give him his due, leading Flaten to submit a formal grievance regarding wage theft with the US Department of Labor. Under the threat of legal action, Walker ultimately decided to clear his debt, but his method was filled with pettiness: he poured approximately 91,000 pennies, described as oily, onto Flaten’s driveway.

Walker’s immature act of defiance might have backfired, though. His refusal to pay and subsequent unusual behavior caught the Department of Labor’s attention, triggering an investigation into his business practices. After nearly a year, this inquiry has escalated into a lawsuit initiated by the Department of Labor, accusing Walker of regularly withholding employee wages and failing to compensate for overtime work. Walker now faces charges of non-payment and illegal retaliation regarding the penny incident.

Subsequent to the penny debacle, Walker’s company faced a sharp decline in reviews, while Walker himself stood firm in his stance online, criticizing any opposition as “cancel culture” and frequently making unpleasant comments about Flaten. On the other hand, Flaten appreciates the governmental support in this issue and remains unfazed by Walker’s opinions. However, there still remains a prominent mark on Flaten’s driveway due to the oily coin spill.
