House Of The Dragon Season 2 Promos Hint A Major Conflict Between Blacks And Greens

Which side are you on: Black or Green? That’s the question posed by the official House of the Dragon Season 2 promos — yes, there are multiple of them — teasing the fierce internal conflict between Targaryen successors Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her half-sibling Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney). HBO has unveiled two competing trailers for the upcoming season, showcasing the clash from the viewpoints of both Rhaenyra’s Black party and Aegon’s Green supporters, named after his allegiance to his mother’s house, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

House of the Dragon Season 2 continues right after the Season 1 conclusion, where Alicent cunningly maneuvered to place Aegon on the throne instead of Rhaenyra, her once friend turned rival. Aegon, as one of the descendants of the late King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), makes a rightful claim to the throne. However, this move goes against the previously arranged succession plan of Rhaenyra, Viserys’ daughter, pushing both women to rally allies across the realm. The murder of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) by Alicent’s son Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon escalates the family feud that threatens to tear Westeros apart.

As depicted in the promos, both factions, the Blacks and the Greens, are ready to take drastic actions to secure their positions on the throne. Rhaenyra, with a bold new haircut reminiscent of Shiv Roy, relies on her husband/uncle Daemon (Matt Smith) to gather support through intimidation. “Our terms are clear: Reject the false king and pledge loyalty to the queen, or face the consequences,” warns Daemon. On the other side, the Hightowers leverage their alliance with the Baratheons and the chaos-loving Aegon and Aemond to their advantage.

While some strive for neutrality and others advocate for peace, the conflict has now reached a point where such hopes seem unattainable. Notorious schemer Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) articulates this in the Green promo: “We will triumph and bring about peace. However, recognize that the path to victory now involves violence.”

Aside from presenting different perspectives on the legendary tale from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood — HBO stated in a press release that “The Green and Black trailers mirror the distinctive points of view in two separate yet complementary parts of the same story” — the dual promos engage viewers as active participants in the unfolding saga. A third teaser, prompting viewers to choose either the extended Green or Black promo, emphasizes that “everyone must make a choice” in the Targaryen civil war, portraying the division within Westeros in Season 2.

House of the Dragon Season 2 debuts on June 16 on HBO. Engage in discussions about the series on our forums.
