Hasbro Working on ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Film

An upcoming project is set to align with the game’s 50th anniversary.

Ever since its inception in the 1970s by the late Gary Gygax, the roleplaying board game Dungeons & Dragons has remained the preferred choice of roleplaying enthusiasts globally. With multiple updates and endless possibilities for custom kits, the game has built a dedicated and enduring fanbase. Moreover, it has proven to be fertile ground for entertainment development, sparking numerous films and series over the years. The next D&D film, however, will stray from the norm as it focuses solely on the game itself.

Entertainment One, a division of Hasbro, has announced their ongoing work on a documentary about Dungeons & Dragons. The project will be overseen by D&D writer Joe Manganiello and Kyle Newman. Nick Manganiello, Anthony Savini, and Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast president and digital gaming head Cecily Tyler have been enlisted as producers.

“Approaching 50 years of this incredible gaming universe, the timing is right for an officially sanctioned exploration of the game’s roots and current impact on its dedicated and diverse fanbase worldwide, as well as its global cultural resonance,” mentioned Michael Lombardo, eOne’s global television head, in a statement.

The documentary’s producers aim to release it by 2024, aligning with the 50th anniversary of the original module’s launch. This documentary serves as the latest endeavor by Entertainment One as they explore the diverse toy and game properties within Hasbro for innovative entertainment opportunities.

“We envision a promising future for Dungeons & Dragons. We anticipate these opportunities expanding as we develop a comprehensive brand strategy for Dungeons & Dragons, encompassing blockbuster movies and streaming series, high-quality video games, extensive consumer merchandise offerings, and substantial marketing collaborations,” stated Chris Cocks, Hasbro’s CEO, this past April.
