Washington State Power Substations Targeted by Vandals

An estimated 14,000 consumers experienced power loss on Christmas.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, several power substations in Washington state suffered vandalism and destruction by unidentified individuals, resulting in a power outage for approximately 14,000 consumers. At present, there are no identified suspects or motives for these acts of vandalism. It is uncertain whether these incidents were carried out by a single group or multiple entities, although they bear similarities to a previous attack on a power facility in North Carolina in November.

According to reports provided to the local Sheriff’s department by the substation managers, “Deputies responded to the scene and noted evidence of unauthorized access to the fenced area. Although nothing was stolen from the substation, the perpetrator maliciously damaged the equipment, leading to a power outage in the vicinity.”

“We received a report from Puget Sound Energy at 11:25 indicating a power outage occurring this morning at 02:39 a.m. Deputies are presently at the facility where the fenced area was breached and equipment was vandalized,” the Sheriff’s department detailed.

Following the previous incident in November, the Federal Bureau of Investigations cautioned power utilities that extremist individuals might be targeting substations with the aim of “instigating civil unrest and encouraging further acts of violence.” However, the FBI neither confirmed nor dismissed the possibility of an ongoing federal inquiry, asserting to CNN that “We treat threats against our critical infrastructure seriously and encourage anyone with relevant details to reach out to law enforcement.”
