US House Phones Officially Barred from Installing TikTok
Security apprehensions lead to TikTok’s removal from government-issued phones.
The fact that the United States government holds concerns regarding the Chinese roots of the renowned social networking service TikTok is no secret. Over the past few years, attempts to completely eradicate the app in the US have been made, but none of these endeavors have been successful due to insufficient evidence. Nevertheless, although the government cannot prohibit TikTok on the phones of the general populace, it has the power to restrict it on its employees’ devices.

As per an internal memo received by CNN and forwarded to the members of the US House of Representatives, TikTok is now prohibited from all House-issued mobile phones owing to security fears. Any individual associated with the House, including employees, possessing the app on their mobile device allocated by the House will be requested to uninstall it promptly. This development follows several state government declarations in recent times prohibiting the app on government-issued gadgets. Moreover, there is a stipulation in the forthcoming omnibus bill to ban the app on the devices of federal government staff.

Although no concrete evidence of security breaches by the Chinese government through TikTok has been uncovered, federal investigators have voiced concerns that this scenario could change if China decides to exert direct influence on ByteDance, the parent company of the app. ByteDance continues to be in negotiations with the government to secure agreements ensuring the continued availability of their app in the US.
