Due to circumstances like the pandemic, Nintendo has been relatively reserved with their information over the past year. While there have been a few smaller showcases such as Indie World and news about Smash Ultimate, avid observers on Twitter have noted that it has been precisely 530 days since the last major Nintendo Direct presentation. Owners of the Switch have been eagerly awaiting news on the console’s next flagship games and release dates, but currently, these details remain undisclosed. However, the good news is that answers are imminent.

Today, Nintendo announced on Twitter that they will be hosting an official Nintendo Direct event for the first time in well over a year. The presentation will be livestreamed on their official YouTube channel, and although specific details are scarce at this point, it is confirmed to be around 50 minutes long. The event will focus on various upcoming Switch games in 2021, with particular attention expected on Smash Ultimate news, potentially related to the next DLC character.

Despite the lack of specific information, speculation is running rampant, especially after such a prolonged wait. Games like Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, and the upcoming sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have been silent since their announcements several years ago. In the case of Bayonetta 3, Head of Platinum Games Hideki Kamiya recently indicated that fans shouldn’t anticipate news anytime soon. Apart from these, enthusiasts on Twitter are hopeful for a new iteration of Mario Kart, while rumors persist about a potential Switch hardware upgrade or sequel, although Nintendo personnel have repeatedly dismissed these rumors.

Whatever the outcome may be, it promises to be an event worth witnessing. Don’t miss the new Nintendo Direct on Wednesday, February 17 at 2 PM Central Time, 5 PM Eastern Time.
