Cruella, the follow-up/spin-off to Disney’s beloved animated movie 101 Dalmatians, has been screening in cinemas and on Disney+ for approximately two weeks. Other than a recent influx of viral jokes regarding why Cruella harbors such a strong dislike towards Dalmatians (hint: it’s just as absurd as you’d expect), the feedback has been highly positive. The film has already raked in a $48.5 million profit at the box office, despite the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic deterring many from theaters. In line with Disney’s standard practice, once they recognize a property’s profitability, they waste no time in capitalizing on it.

As per a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is already laying the groundwork for a sequel to Cruella. The movie’s director Craig Gillespie and writer Tony McNamara are both slated to return for the sequel. While it’s not officially confirmed whether Emma Stone will reprise her role in the iconic black and white ensemble, it would be surprising if she didn’t, so the odds are in favor.

“We are thrilled with the success of Cruella at the box office, bolstered by its strong performance on Disney+ Premier Access so far,” a Disney representative stated to Variety. “The film has resonated incredibly well with global audiences, boasting a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and A ratings across all demographics from CinemaScore during its opening weekend, positioning it as one of the most adored among our live-action reboots. We are anticipating sustained popularity as audiences continue to relish this remarkable cinematic experience.”

“I sense we’ve only scratched the surface with her,” Gillespie shared with Collider regarding Cruella as a character. “She has built a network of support around her and has the potential to further develop her brand. I am curious to explore where this journey will lead her and how her immense power could ultimately become a threat to her well-being from within.”
