Over the last 25 years, former President and tycoon Donald Trump has been a fixture on the Forbes 400, a compilation of the 400 richest individuals in the United States regularly revised by Forbes magazine. Trump’s affluence kept him comfortably within the upper echelon of the list from 1997 to 2016, up until his Presidential inauguration. Yet, it appears assuming the role of President did not yield the financial gains Trump may have envisioned, as in the most recent iteration of the Forbes 400, he has completely fallen off the radar.

As per the Forbes 400, Trump’s current net worth hovers around $2.5 billion, falling $400 million short of the requisite threshold for list inclusion. Based on Forbes’ analysts’ assessments, Trump could have not only sustained but even expanded his wealth, notwithstanding his Presidency, had it not been for a series of happenings within and beyond his control. If Trump had diversified his assets upon assuming the Presidency rather than retaining them, he could have potentially amassed $4.5 billion.

A substantial portion of Trump’s fortune is concentrated in real estate, particularly prominent skyscrapers in the New York City region, along with ventures in hospitality sectors like golf resorts. Both these domains bore the brunt of the COVID-19 crisis, with potential tenants and buyers vacating urban areas like New York City in favor of suburban locales, and the hospitality industry suffering as clientele remained confined due to lockdown measures.

Forbes’ analysts speculate that had Trump either refrained from becoming President or proactively strategized for such eventualities, he could have accrued a staggering $7 billion. Instead, his total assets dwindled by over $1 billion during his Presidential tenure, ultimately disqualifying him from the Forbes 400.
