The Sunken Hong Kong Eatery

Over the weekend, the renowned Jumbo Kingdom submerged.

Ever since its inception in 1976, the Jumbo Kingdom restaurant has stood out as a prominent spot in Hong Kong. This colossal, tri-level floating diner has graced Hong Kong’s Aberdeen Harbor for years, entertaining numerous notable figures such as Tom Cruise, Bruce Lee, and Queen Elizabeth II. Regrettably, this famous landmark met an abrupt demise in the ocean depths this weekend.

Recently, the Jumbo Kingdom was transported out of the harbor to the open sea, heading towards a shipyard. With heavy losses due to COVID-19-related closures, the restaurant was moved out of public waters until its license expired. While en route during the weekend, severe weather conditions caused the vessel to overturn and sink in the South China Sea. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this mishap.

As per a statement from Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Limited, the proprietors of Jumbo Kingdom, the eatery descended approximately 1,000 meters below the sea surface. This circumstance has made salvage operations incredibly challenging. The company is presently investigating the towing company responsible for transporting the restaurant.

The submersion has sparked online memorials, with many Hong Kong residents grieving the loss of one of the city’s most renowned landmarks. The Tai Pak, Jumbo’s smaller sibling ship, still remains moored at Aberdeen Harbor.
