Ilia Smirnov’s journey into the world of video storytelling is a remarkable tale of passion and creativity.

Growing up in Russia, he initially pursued a career in engineering. He earned a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from Izhevsk State Technical University in 2007. However, while he excelled in his studies, he realized his heart lay elsewhere.

“I always loved storytelling,” Ilia reflects. “Engineering taught me how to solve problems, but I wanted to create something that touched people.” This realization was pivotal. 

After five years as a Design Engineer at LLC Special Technologies, where he learned to navigate complex projects, he made a bold choice. Ilia decided to embrace his passion for storytelling.

A Breakthrough at 1147 Productions

In 2013, he took a leap of faith and joined 1147 Productions as a screenwriter. This marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in his career. “Writing was a way to breathe life into ideas,” he recalls. “It was about more than just words on a page; it was about connecting with an audience.”

At 1147 Productions, Ilia quickly made a name for himself. He worked on commercials and corporate videos for high-profile clients, including Rosneft, Severstal, and Salym Petroleum.

He didn’t just write scripts. He crafted narratives that resonated deeply with viewers. His role evolved rapidly, and by 2015, he was not only writing but leading entire production cycles.

One standout project was for Severstal, where Ilia developed a training video for the SAB System, an essential tool for the company. He faced the challenge of turning complex technical information into an engaging visual story.

“It was crucial to make it understandable,” he shares. “Seeing it praised for its clarity was incredibly rewarding.” His ability to simplify and engage through video became a hallmark of his work.

Ilia’s influence at 1147 Productions was significant. He led projects that bolstered the company’s reputation, driving successful bids for major contracts. “We set a standard for quality, and I was proud to be part of a team that consistently delivered exceptional work,” he states.

Under his leadership, the company thrived, winning competitive tenders and receiving awards for its innovative content.

Growing as a Producer

In 2018, Ilia embraced a new challenge as a Producer at Media Center Sparrow. In this role, he managed the entire creative process, overseeing everything from writing to production. “It was about balancing artistic vision with logistical realities,” he explains.

He ensured that each project was executed flawlessly, handling budgets and timelines while maintaining a focus on storytelling.

From 2019 to 2021, Ilia continued to hone his skills at the Vorobyovy Gory Institute. During this time, he produced over 100 video segments and 69 podcasts, many of which garnered national and international awards.

“Every project was a chance to push the boundaries of what we could achieve,” he recalls. His work on programs like “Radiokalendar” and “Goroda-Geroi” showcased his commitment to creating content that informed and entertained.

Ilia’s success is evident not only in his projects but also in his earnings. He consistently earned a salary well above industry standards, reflecting his extraordinary talent and the value he brought to every endeavor.

“It was never just about the money; it was about the impact of our work,” he emphasizes. His projects not only impressed audiences but also secured lasting partnerships with major corporations.

Future Plans in the U.S.

Now, Ilia is preparing to take the next step by bringing his skills to the United States. He views America as a land filled with opportunities for collaboration and innovation in media.

“I want to work on projects that use cutting-edge technology, like virtual and augmented reality, to tell stories in new and engaging ways,” he states with enthusiasm. His goal is not just to entertain but also to address important social and cultural issues through his work.

“Storytelling has the power to inspire change, and I want to be part of that,” Ilia declares. His vision is clear, and his determination is evident. He aims to create content that not only captivates audiences but also provokes thought and encourages dialogue.
