Selected Filmmakers for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Sequel
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stood out as one of the most remarkable films in recent years for me, not solely due to my immense passion for Spider-Man. Well, not exclusively for that reason. It was an exquisitely crafted movie with outstanding performances, a heartfelt narrative, and thrilling action sequences. Any film featuring both Nic Cage and John Mulaney is bound to be extraordinary. Therefore, the burning question now is… will the sequel surpass its predecessor?
Sony Pictures Animation has revealed today their choice of a fresh trio of filmmakers to lead the way on the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse. This trio includes Kemp Powers, who co-directed the Oscar-nominated film Soul for Pixar, Joaquim Dos Santos, known for directing Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and Justin K. Thompson, the production designer from the initial Spider-Verse movie.
“The team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse set an unbelievably high standard, and we feel honored to embark on the journey of shaping the next installment in Miles Morales’ story,” expressed the trio of directors in a collective statement.
Exciting news for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 – new directors on board:

Joining the directorial trio are Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg, all returning as producers for the project, with Alonzo Ruvalcaba as a co-producer. Peter Ramsey, the director of the first film, will serve as an executive producer on the sequel.
“We are thrilled to have Joaquim, Justin, and Kemp as part of the Spider-Verse team,” stated Lord and Miller. “Joaquim’s work is truly inspiring — he infuses his characters with depth and individuality, effectively weaving emotional narratives into action sequences much like music does with lyrics. Justin is a visionary filmmaker known for his relentless pursuit of visual ingenuity and surprise, always in service of emotional storytelling. Kemp’s work is sharp, daring, and humorous — blending the wisdom of a writer with the compassion of a director, understanding the essence of every scene. All three of them bring a unique touch to every project they undertake, and they are undoubtedly pushing our creative boundaries. We sincerely admire them and aspire to build a lasting friendship by collaborating on this movie over the next few years.”
