Recent Study Indicates Decrease in Exam Results Amidst Worldwide Health Crisis
There was a significant decrease in grades for mathematics and reading comprehension amidst the ongoing pandemic.
The outbreak of COVID-19 and the resulting changes in lifestyle undoubtedly affected everyone, but one specific demographic that faced severe challenges was students. Compelled to engage in remote learning during periods of confinement, students experienced a notable decrease in their drive. According to a recent analysis from the National Center for Education Statistics, this unfavorable situation has had enduring consequences on students’ exam results.

Based on assessments in mathematics and literary understanding within the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also recognized as the “Nation’s Report Card,” various student cohorts, notably fourth and eighth graders, witnessed a substantial decline in exam scores over recent years.
“This should serve as a stark reminder for us to intensify our initiatives and enhance education, even prior to, and especially after, the pandemic,” expressed US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in an interview with CNN, emphasizing the necessity for schools to utilize the relief funds from the 2021 legislation to tackle this issue.

“The eighth grade acts as a gateway to more advanced mathematical coursework,” highlighted National Center for Education Statistics Commissioner Peggy Carr in a public statement. “These are the essential skills these students are lacking. They are missing out on fundamental competencies that will eventually equip them for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.”
“What we are observing is that students with lower academic performance are experiencing even more rapid declines, and we are also witnessing students who were previously unaffected – those at the top, indicating students performing at higher levels – they were maintaining their status quo prior to the pandemic or even advancing,” Carr elucidated. “Now, all students, irrespective of their proficiency, are seeing a decline. This is the key takeaway from this study.”
