Razzies Extend Apologies to Ryan Kiera Armstrong

Razzies Extend Apologies to Ryan Kiera Armstrong

Regretting the inappropriate nomination of a 12-year-old for worst actress, the satirical award show issues an apology.

The Golden Raspberry Awards, commonly known as the Razzies, are a yearly satirical event that offers a humorous spin on major award ceremonies like the Oscars and Golden Globes. Instead of celebrating achievements in the entertainment industry, the Razzies mock underperformance and low moments in entertainment, highlighting poorly-received films and lackluster performances.

Despite the event’s lighthearted nature, organizers acknowledged crossing a line with one nomination this year. Particularly, the nomination for worst actress – 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong for her role in Firestarter. Criticism was received for insensitivity towards such a young performer, prompting a public apology and withdrawal of her nomination.

“At times, actions are taken without proper consideration. It’s only after receiving feedback that one truly comprehends the impact. This is the essence behind the Razzies’ inception,” mentioned John B. Wilson, co-founder of the Razzies, in a statement released on Wednesday.

“Recent valid feedback on selecting 11-year-old Armstrong as a nominee for one of our accolades shed light on the insensitivity in this case,” the statement elaborated. “Consequently, we have excluded Armstrong from the final voting list that our members will evaluate next month. Recognizing our error, we also believe it is essential to extend a public apology to Ms. Armstrong and express regret for any distress caused by our decisions.”

“Our intention has never been to hinder anyone’s career. This explains the existence of our Redeemer Award,” the statement concluded. “Mistakes are part of being human, and we, just as much, are not immune to them. Adhering to our motto ‘Own Your Bad,’ we recognize the necessity of holding ourselves accountable.”

Moving ahead, the Razzies will restrict nominations to actors and actresses aged 18 years or above.
