The renowned groundhog projected another six weeks of winter.
Today, on February 2, Groundhog Day is celebrated in the United States. As it occurs annually, the focal point of the festivities is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where the world-famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, made his customary forecast for the remaining winter period.

Early in the day, the members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club assembled at Gobbler’s Knob in front of the press, where Phil was extracted from his burrow alongside the “Groundhogeese” scroll that outlines his prediction. The club members announced Phil’s forecast, disclosing that the creature spotted its shadow upon emerging from its burrow, indicating that winter will continue for an additional six weeks.
As a customary belief linked to Groundhog Day, if the groundhog observes its shadow upon emerging, it foretells a prolonged winter season. Conversely, if it fails to spot its shadow and leaves its burrow, it denotes the arrival of an early spring that year.

Phil is presently on a three-year streak of forecasting extended winters, having previously predicted the same in 2022 and 2021. Staten Island Chuck, another notable American groundhog from New York City, has contradicted Phil’s forecast, asserting that the spring season this year is imminent.
