The security team of the couple reported that dealing with “numerous” photographers proved to be challenging during their transportation, but luckily, there were no reports of accidents, injuries, or arrests by the authorities. However, as per the spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess, the confrontation with the paparazzi was an extended and dangerous ordeal that lasted for more than two hours, leading to several close calls, endangering not only the royal couple but also other motorists, pedestrians, and even two NYPD officers.

Security personnel involved in ensuring the couple’s safety described the chaotic ordeal. The paparazzi used a variety of vehicles, ranging from cars to scooters, mopeds, and electric bikes, forcing the Sussexes to switch vehicles during the intense pursuit. Thomas Buda, in charge of a private security firm enlisted to aid the couple, disclosed that the chase commenced from the moment Prince Harry and Meghan departed from the Ziegfeld Ballroom, extending over a harrowing 90-minute period.

The paparazzi’s persistent pursuit blatantly flouted traffic regulations, disregarding red lights and even driving against traffic on bustling Manhattan streets. Chris Sanchez, a member of the security team, expressed his shock, confessing that he had never encountered such an extreme situation before. The safety of the public was jeopardized multiple times throughout the chase, leaving the royal couple in a state of fear and relief upon reaching the safety of their residence. Sanchez emphasized the seriousness of the situation, acknowledging the potential fatal consequences.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) validated the core of the couple’s narrative, though with a more measured tone. Deputy Commissioner Julian Phillips acknowledged the NYPD’s cooperation with the private security team and the hurdles posed by numerous photographers.

According to the couple’s team, the incident involved several unidentified individuals driving recklessly in six blacked-out vehicles, posing a significant threat to the procession and all those in its proximity. Fortunately, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex navigated this perilous challenge unharmed, yet the alarming episode underscores the dangers that can accompany their public positions.
