Perrie Edwards Expresses Grief Over Liam Payne’s Passing
Perrie Edwards reflected on the passing of Liam Payne, drawing parallels between their experiences in the music industry and the toll of fame.
Perrie Edwards has long been connected with the One Direction members. Her band, Little Mix, along with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, and Jesy Nelson, gained prominence in a manner similar to One Direction, and Perrie was even engaged to former One Direction member Zayn Malik for a while.
Thus, it’s unsurprising that the news of Liam Payne’s death deeply impacted her, as she discussed her feelings on a podcast, describing the news as “heartbreaking” and expressing disbelief at its reality.
Liam tragically died at the age of 31 on October 16th after a fall from his hotel balcony in Argentina.
“It’s just so strange, and so incredibly sad. My heart truly aches for his family, friends, Cheryl, and his young son. It’s utterly devastating, and the thought of what they must be going through is beyond me,” she stated.
Perrie then shared her struggle to accept the news initially, turning to her fellow Little Mix members for support in facing the reality of what had occurred.
“When I first read it, it didn’t feel real to me, and it’s such a surreal feeling—everyone seems to sense it. We were all messaging each other; I think Leigh-Anne said how close to home it felt for us, given how similar our careers are.”
Leigh-Anne possibly referred to the fact that both Little Mix and One Direction emerged from the X Factor competitions in 2010 and 2011. The individual members of both groups initially auditioned as soloists but were combined into bands before achieving remarkable success.
“We had a connection with One Direction, and it’s incredibly sad. It sent shivers down my spine when I saw the headlines; I couldn’t believe it,” Perrie continued on the podcast. “It really shakes you up; it’s just awful, and all our love goes out to his family. It’s unimaginable what they are enduring.”
As both band members ascended to fame at a tender age, it is understandable that such success came at a considerable cost.
During the podcast, Perrie was asked about the challenges associated with their rapid rise to fame, to which she replied: “Being successful is entirely distinct from being famous. Success is wonderful; it’s joyous. It means you’re pursuing your passion and reaping the rewards, which feels fantastic.”
“On the other hand, fame represents the dark side of success that people often overlook. At first, I wanted to be a famous pop star, to sign autographs, to be recognized, and to achieve household name status.”
“But you never contemplate the accompanying difficulties, and it can be exceptionally tough and intense. That’s why I strive to surround myself with supportive people who uplift me during difficult times. I even bring my therapist along to work on occasion, as I genuinely struggle to handle panic attacks and similar issues.”
