Pepsi Produces Soda-Flavored Pepperoni

It is widely known that, among prominent commercially available fizzy drinks, one of the top picks to go with pizza is regular Pepsi. The distinct sweetness and tang of Pepsi complements excellently with the savory oiliness of a classic New York-style pizza slice. If you have a strong fondness for both Pepsi and pizza, then you might find Pepsi’s latest culinary creation intriguing.

In collaboration with the Culinary Institute of America, Pepsi Cola has introduced the first-ever cola-infused pepperoni, specially designed as a topping for pizzas. Instead of the usual water used in preparing pepperoni, this new “Pepsi-Roni” employs a reduction made from Pepsi Zero Sugar. As stated in a press release from Pepsi shared with The Takeout, this fusion results in pepperoni that is “imbued with the rich caramel undertones and brown spices along with the zesty kick of Pepsi cola.”

“The idea is quite straightforward. Pepperoni brings a smoky spiciness, while the Pepsi contributes a citrusy sweetness,” elucidates David Kamen, head of client experience at CIA Consulting. “It’s a captivating blend that we believe pizza enthusiasts will be eager to taste.”

Although it might seem unconventional, the use of soda in meat dishes is a fairly traditional technique, with beverages like Coke or Dr. Pepper often employed in cooking dishes like brisket or pulled pork. If you’re intrigued to taste the Pepsi-Roni yourself, act fast as it will only be on offer today at the Made in New York Pizza located in the West Village of Manhattan. Who knows, if it proves to be popular (and it most likely will), Pepsi might introduce their cola-infused pepperoni in other locations.
