Officials in Hawaii Prep for Lava Flow from Mauna Loa

The lava is nearing a significant roadway.

Earlier this week, the massive active volcano, Mauna Loa, erupted on the Big Island of Hawaii, releasing ash and a stream of lava. While there is no immediate danger to the lives of Hawaiian residents, the advancement of the lava towards inhabited areas has raised concerns among locals about the condition of essential infrastructure.

By Wednesday morning, the lava flow had approached approximately 3.6 miles from Saddle Road, also recognized as Daniel K. Inouye Highway, a crucial route on the Big Island. Saddle Road serves as the primary link between the western and eastern regions of the island, and any damage caused by the lava flow could result in significantly longer commute times for residents. In addition to inconveniences, it could also impact deliveries and emergency services.

Adam Weintraub, the communication director at Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, stated to CNN, “County authorities have collaborated with the state Department of Transportation to develop a strategy to close down Daniel K. Inouye Highway if the lava approaches to the point of endangerment. These plans are preliminary and may change depending on the lava’s progress.”

The lava’s pace is gradually decelerating and expanding as it travels away from the volcano, which gives reassurance to the local geological survey that in case the lava encroaches on critical infrastructure, they can at least issue a warning with a day’s notice.
