New ‘Scream’ Movie Initial Insights Revealed
The original Scream movie paid homage to and dismantled established horror genre conventions. Initially, the first script for Scream bore the title “Scary Movie,” a name later adopted by a famous satirical film. Much like the traditional elements of horror, Scream stayed dormant for quite some time, with the previous installment hitting theaters in 2011. Today, we have been gifted with a trailer and specifics regarding the comeback of Ghostface.
The upcoming movie, going by the simple moniker Scream, is scheduled for release on January 14, 2022. Despite its confusing title choice, this film is not a complete reboot of the Scream series. Instead, it continues the narrative of the previous films, welcoming back various characters, although they won’t be the primary focus. In essence, this movie can be seen as a continuation of the Scream series. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett faced a nerve-wracking experience convincing the original actors to come back.
Sharing his thoughts with Entertainment Weekly, Gillett expressed, “It was a highly stressful situation. Those roles were indispensable, integral to the essence of the script. We couldn’t envision the movie without them, so not having them onboard right from the start was certainly frightening.”

Eventually, the directors succeeded in persuading Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette to reprise their roles as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley, respectively.
Reflecting on the decision, Campbell admitted, “I was genuinely torn. The notion of continuing these projects without Wes Craven was daunting to me. I deeply respected the man. However, Matt and Tyler penned a heartfelt letter, expressing their admiration and profound regard for Wes Craven, underscoring that they owe their directorial career to these movies and Wes, which resonated greatly with me.”
