MrBeast Pays for Cataract Surgery for 1,000 People

The prominent YouTuber used his wealth to restore sight to 1,000 people.

Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson is one of the most prominent content creators on YouTube, with over 130 million subscribers on his channel and, as a result of that, a considerable net worth. MrBeast has used his wealth to make his videos into grand-scale productions, constructing sets and paying for services. His latest video, however, is as grandiose as it is heartwarming.

In a video released on Sunday, MrBeast personally paid for cataract surgeries for over 1,000 individuals who suffer from cataract-induced blindness. MrBeast bankrolled the proceudres, while Florida ophthalmologist Jeff Levenson performed them. Levenson is also the coordinator of the “Gift of Sight” program, which provides cataract surgeries for those who can’t afford them. The reactions of every patient were shown after their sight was restored, able to see in perfect clarity in what was, for some of them, the first time in a long time.

“Half of all blindness in the world is people who need a 10-minute surgery,” Levenson said in the video, saying that he was inspired to his cause after his own sight was restored by a procedure.

“In the days and weeks after my own cataract surgery, I was stunned by how bright and beautiful and vivid the world was,” he said. “But I was shocked by the idea that there are hundreds of millions, probably 200 million people around the world, who are blind or nearly blind from cataracts and who don’t have access to the surgery.”

“I had never heard of MrBeast,” Levenson admitted. “So I almost hung up. But I gratefully did not hang up.”

At the time of writing, MrBeast’s video has drawn 46,384,722 views and 4.6 million likes. Levenson hopes that positive reception of the video will bring about “a concerted effort to end needless blindness.”

“If MrBeast can light a fire, and if we can get governmental and private support behind it, we can end half of all the blindness in the world,” he said. “Without all that much cost, and with incredible gains in human productivity and human potential.”
