Legal Professionals Agree on Settlement for Surfside Condo Victims

Almost $1 billion will be paid out to the surviving parties of the collapse.

Last June, there was a partial collapse of a condominium in Surfside, Florida. This tragedy led to the loss of 98 lives and the displacement of many more individuals. The incident initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain the underlying cause of the collapse and assign responsibility. Now, close to a year later, the impacted individuals are being compensated.

The legal advisors of the survivors managed to finalize a settlement worth $997 million, offering compensation to both the survivors and the bereaved families impacted by the tragic event. Upon hearing about this settlement, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman was truly taken aback.

Addressing the courtroom, the judge expressed, “I’m truly amazed by this outcome – it’s truly remarkable. This is an outcome that exceeds all my expectations.”

Judge Hanzman aims to formalize the settlement by the anniversary of the collapse in June, with disbursements scheduled to commence in the autumn. “Some of the victims may never fully recover from this tragedy, and we understand that,” Hanzman stated. “My objective was to exhaust all possible efforts to conclude this matter by the first anniversary of the incident.”

Per attorney Judd Rosen, the settlement “signifies liability from various entities.”

“It’s the most substantial settlement resulting from a singular event in the history of the United States,” Rosen remarked. “The figure itself demonstrates a solid level of accountability for what occurred.”
