Legal Action Filed by Florida Woman Against Kraft Due to Longer Velveeta Preparation Time

Normally, in the United States, all ready-to-cook food items come with instructions for preparation, including an approximation of the time needed to prepare it. In the scenario of Kraft’s Velveeta Shells & Cheese microwaveable mac and cheese, the estimated preparation time is three and a half minutes. Nonetheless, for a consumer in Florida, this approximation is insufficient.

Florida resident Amanda Ramirez has initiated a collective lawsuit against Kraft Heinz Foods Company, asserting that Velveeta Shells & Cheese takes longer than three and a half minutes to prepare, which amounts to deceitful advertising. Ramirez is demanding $5 million in compensation for this lawsuit.
Ramirez’s alleged proof for her assertion is that the guidelines suggest microwaving the product for three and a half minutes. However, considering the time needed to prepare it, including unpackaging, adding water, and stirring, it is not practically feasible for the product to be readied in that timespan.
The legal complaint claims that the preparation duration is seemingly a tactic to rationalize charging a higher price for the product, and that Ramirez, “is akin to numerous customers who strive to maximize their saving when purchasing groceries.”

Due to the difference in time, she “ended up spending more on the Product compared to what she would have paid and might not have bought it or would have paid less had she been aware of the truth.”
Kraft, understandably, has brushed off the lawsuit as meaningless and unwarranted. A spokesperson from Kraft Heinz Foods Company informed CNN, “We are cognizant of this frivolous lawsuit and will vigorously counter the accusations in the allegation.”
