Lady Gaga Reveals The Meaning Behind ‘Disease’ Lyrics And Music Video

Launching the promotional phase of LG7, ‘Disease’ is a dark dance-pop track that harkens back to Gaga’s earlier successes.

Following her successful transition into acting, Gaga has made a musical comeback, starting with the release of ‘Harlequin’, a soundtrack for the film Joker: Folie à Deux, where she plays Lee Quinn.

Page Six labeled ‘Disease’ as a “return to form” for Gaga, following her jazzy previous release, ‘Harlequin’, and we concur. The publication’s source pointed out that the track sonically echoes her acclaimed ‘Born This Way’ album, describing it as a piece of dark dance-pop reminiscent of her Grammy-nominated 2011 work. Much like ‘Bloody Mary’, this is a song that feels uniquely Gaga.

In the lyrics, Gaga expresses that her allure is so powerful that being with her could heal any affliction. She sings: I could play the doctor, I can cure your disease / If you were a sinner, I could make you believe / Lay you down like one, two, three / Eyes roll back in ecstasy.

The accompanying music video has also been characterized as “painstakingly choreographed,” drawing comparisons to 2009’s ‘Bad Romance’ and 2011’s ‘Judas’, although it has yet to be released.

According to the US Sun, the song’s choreography was crafted by Emmy-winner Parris Goebel, noted for her work on Rihanna’s 2023 Super Bowl halftime show as well as Justin Bieber’s 2015 videos for ‘What Do You Mean?’ and ‘Sorry.’

In the music video, Gaga portrays six distinct iterations of herself. Upon releasing the video on October 30th, she elaborated on its concept, stating: “I often reflect on my relationship with my own inner demons. Confronting how I’m drawn to chaos and confusion has never been easy for me. It creates a feeling of confinement.

“Disease addresses those fears, encouraging me to confront my inner darkness. I realize that I can’t always elude the frightening aspects of myself. I can attempt to flee, but eventually, I will have to face those parts again, if only momentarily.

“In the process of dancing, transforming, evading, and releasing – over and over – I return to myself. This integration is fundamentally beautiful because it belongs to me, and I’ve learned to cope with it. I am the master of my own symphony, playing every role in the narratives that shape my art and my existence.

“Regardless of how daunting the inquiries may be, the responses lie within me. They are essential, inseparable elements of my identity. By persisting, I rescue myself. I embrace my entirety, I am resilient, and I am prepared for the trials ahead. Happy Halloween.”
