Jerry Seinfeld Addresses Weird Overtones in ‘Bee Movie’

2007’s Bee Movie is to this day one of the strangest big-budget animated films ever produced. It stars Jerry Seinfeld as a bee who discovers humanity harvesting honey, who then proceeds to sue the entire human race on theft charges, all while striking up what is pretty obviously a romantic relationship with a human woman. To call it weird would be a hilarious understatement, though that’s probably the reason the film has become prime fodder for internet memes in modern times. Memes and jokes aside, though, the whole bee and human romance thing has always been a bit of a “wait, what?” aspect to just about anyone who has seen the film, and over the weekend, Seinfeld himself acknowledged that its inclusion probably wasn’t the best idea.
During an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to promote the Seinfeld‘s move over to Netflix (the show, I mean), Seinfeld looked back on his long and crazy career. “It always takes longer than people think, you know, to be a comedian,” Seinfeld explained. “I had to go on the Tonight Show and Letterman like 80 times and then roast my nuts doing a TV series for nine years. Then I had to get married — I got married a 45. That takes a long time to find a great person. I had three kids. I had to straighten their insane asses out, and then I had to make a movie with a bee,” he said.

Obviously, neither Fallon nor the audience would let that pass without comment, so Seinfeld decided to address it, apologizing “for what seems to be a certain uncomfortable subtle sexual aspect of the Bee Movie. [It] really was not intentional, but after it came out, I realized this is really not appropriate for children. Because the bee seems to have a thing for the girl, and we don’t really want to pursue that as an idea in children’s entertainment.”
