Jenna Ortega Speaks About Challenging Bedroom Scene In Miller’s Girl
Recall the controversial bedroom sequence in Miller’s Girl? Jenna Ortega recently tackled the backlash surrounding the age gap between herself and Martin Freeman in the movie, defending the disturbing experiences depicted in the film.
In early January, excerpts from Miller’s Girl circulated on social media, prompting viewers to denounce the inappropriate relationships portrayed in the movie. Within Miller’s Girl, Jenna assumes the role of Cairo, an 18-year-old student, who attempts to seduce her significantly older creative writing instructor, Jonathan (Martin Freeman). The storyline unfolds into multiple dark twists.
The film not only features intimate moments between Cairo and Jonathan but also includes a scene where Cairo leans over a bed while Jonathan caresses her hair. Subsequently, it is revealed that Jonathan is envisioning a sexual scenario with Cairo while engaging in self-gratification.
Martin also came to the defense of the film in April. During an interview with The Times, Martin asserted that Miller’s Girl is a “mature and nuanced” production that neither endorses nor condemns the relationship dynamic between Cairo and Jonathan. According to Martin, the film does not glorify the scenario, but rather explores difficult subject matter that can be perceived in a contentious light.
In another context, the film’s intimacy coordinator, Kristina Arjona, assured the audience that Jenna felt at ease while filming the bedroom scene. During an interview with The Daily Mail, Kristina emphasized, “Numerous individuals throughout this process interacted with [Jenna] to ensure that her comfort was maintained, and she was resolute in her decisions.”
Kristina further elaborated on her role, stating, “Part of my responsibility is to support their choices. I adapt to their comfort levels, especially in a scenario like this where there is a significant age difference between the actors. I am acutely mindful of the talent and continuously ensure that we are in tune with their boundaries, preventing any violation thereof.”
She concluded by emphasizing, “I ensure, particularly with someone considerably younger, that their consent is ongoing.”
