According to a recent study conducted by Dr. Benjamin Bleier, a specialist in otolaryngology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, the explanation is straightforward yet intriguing. The heightened vulnerability to sickness in winter arises from cold air impairing the body’s ability to combat viruses in the nasal region. Even a minor decrease in temperature can diminish the efficacy of crucial immune cells in the nostrils, paving the way for invading viruses and bacteria.

“The association between cold air and elevated viral infections stems from the significant decrease in immunity caused by a slight temperature drop,” Dr. Bleier elaborates.

Normally, when your nasal immune system is activated, your cells release extracellular vesicles—mimics of themselves that viruses can attach to, effectively trapping them. This explains the increase in nasal mucus during colder months; the mucus comprises virus-capturing EVs expelled from the body.

“Unlike cells, EVs cannot replicate, but they function as miniature cell replicas specifically engineered to combat viruses,” Dr. Bleier elucidates. “By acting as decoys, EVs divert viruses from binding to actual cells when inhaled.”

This groundbreaking study is receiving accolades from numerous virologists as a significant stride in averting respiratory ailments. While new treatments are in the works, the most effective preventive measure during wintertime is wearing a mask.
