Illinois Prohibits Assault Firearms
Purchasing and owning assault firearms is now unlawful in the state.
This week, Illinois has officially joined the ranks of states like the ninth US that have entirely outlawed assault weaponry and related items, which include semi-automatic rifles, magazines with high capacity, and devices that facilitate rapid firing and modifications. This significant alteration was brought about by Governor J.B. Pritzker’s endorsement of the “Protect Illinois Communities Act.”

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker stated on Tuesday, “For a considerable duration, me and numerous other leaders within the Illinois General Assembly have placed great importance on eliminating the most hazardous weapons from our state’s streets. Today, we have effectively enforced one of the strictest bans on assault firearms nationwide, fulfilling the promise we made.”
The enactment of this new legislation, triggered partly by the Highland Park shooting incident in Chicago six months ago, completely prohibits the buying and possessing of any assault weapons within Illinois’ borders.
I’m exhausted by inhabiting a world where each mass shooting necessitates a label for identification.
Recently, I ratified the Protect Illinois Communities Act, which directly halts the sale and circulation of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches in IL. pic.twitter.com/xvVfrlLSaU

Pritzker emphasized, “No resident of Illinois, irrespective of their postal code, ought to live with the constant dread that their loved ones could potentially become the next victims in the escalating list of mass shooting casualties. Nevertheless, far too many individuals have existed in a state of perpetual anxiety about the prospect of gun violence occurring in schools, places of worship, during festivities, or on their own doorsteps. This law will put an end to the proliferation of assault firearms, high-capacity magazines, and triggers, thereby fostering a safer environment for all inhabitants of our state.”
The Illinois State Rifle Association’s representatives have expressed intentions to challenge the state’s legislative actions regarding the passing of the aforementioned bill.
