1999’s The Matrix was a tentpole film in the entertainment industry at the time. While the plot was a bit… confusing, the carefully engineered spectacle of the film, as well as its sequels, set a tone for action movies for a long time afterwards, not to mention parody. Seriously, name a comedy series or film in the early 2000s, I guarantee there was at least one Matrix reference. The last Matrix film was released in 2003, but this December, after 14 years, it’s time to take the red pill once again.

This morning, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections, a brand new Matrix film directed by Lana Wachowski. Lana, along with her sister Lilly, were the sibling duo that directed and wrote the original Matrix trilogy, though Lilly has decided to distance herself from this production for personal reasons.

The trailer seems to feature Neo (Keanu Reeves) once again in his Thomas Anderson persona, experiencing dreams and flashes of the Matrix, making him question the world he inhabits. Unsurprisingly, he’s still in the Matrix, the world is still fake, and he needs to break out once again. Neo is joined again by Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), as well as someone who appears to be a younger incarnation of Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in lieu of Lawrence Fishburne, who was apparently not asked to join the production.

“After all these years, to be going back to where it all started… back to the Matrix,” Jonathan Groff, another new member of the cast, says in the trailer.

The Matrix: Resurrections will premier in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22. One caveat: to watch on HBO Max, you’ll need to be subscribed at the premium ad-free tier.
