Over the past year, the global amusement park sector has faced challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, deterring large gatherings. However, if there is one franchise that can still draw crowds to amusement parks, it would undoubtedly be Disney. Yet, another successful contender is Nintendo, as demonstrated by the notable turnout for the opening day of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.

Following several delays caused by the pandemic, Super Nintendo World has finally commenced operations. Visitors eagerly queued up to snap photos with the iconic Mario and Luigi characters, acquire the park’s distinctive Power Bands, and explore the diverse array of attractions.

A resident of Osaka, Sakura Konohana, expressed to CNN her astonishment at the park, stating, “I am immersed in the world of Mario.”

Two sisters, Mika and Yuko Kobayashi, adorned in Mario-themed attire, were visibly moved upon entering the park. One of them expressed, “Mario played a pivotal role in my upbringing.”

Despite the jubilation, the looming presence of COVID-19 precautions was evident. Masks and social distancing remain mandatory, temperature checks are conducted at the entrance, and hand sanitizing stations are strategically positioned throughout the park. Similar to other amusement parks worldwide, Super Nintendo World urges guests to minimize screaming while on the rides.

“I feel apprehensive when removing my mask to eat,” Noriko Yoshinaka, a resident of Kyoto, shared. “Nevertheless, the park meticulously adheres to safety measures, sanitizing the rides and surfaces regularly, instilling a sense of security.”
