Exciting Arrival of a Brand New Studio Ghibli Movie in July 2023
How Do You Live is set to hit Japanese cinemas in the upcoming year.
The year 2013 marked the departure of the renowned animated film maestro and the face of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, from his prominent role, as he entrusted the studio’s future to other talented members. However, in 2016, he revealed his plan to return from retirement for one final cinematic endeavor titled How Do You Live, approaching the project at a deliberately measured pace. Six years later, the fruition of this gradual effort has finally arrived.

Today, Studio Ghibli officially announced that How Do You Live (a working title for now) is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. While specific plot details remain undisclosed, the announcement features an intriguing depiction of a bird-like creature. Miyazaki initially mentioned that the film drew inspiration from, but is not a direct adaptation of, the 1937 novel “How Do You Live?” by Yoshino Genzaburo. The novel narrates the journey of a young man named Junichi Honda, also known as Koperu, as he embarks on a spiritual odyssey to discover the essence of humanity. In contrast to this narrative, Miyazaki described his film as grander in scale and more fantastical.

This is likely to be Miyazaki’s final cinematic venture, as he intended to dedicate this film to his grandson before time slipped away.
