Environmental Protection Agency Directs Norfolk Southern to Assist in East Palestine Cleanup Initiative
It’s the responsibility of the train operating company to cover the expenses for the cleanup.
Efforts to restore the area are ongoing after a significant train mishap close to East Palestine, Ohio, resulted in the discharge of substantial amounts of hazardous substances into the land, water, and atmosphere, necessitating the evacuation of local residents. Local entities have done what they can, but the cleanup endeavor is expected to be prolonged and challenging.

To hasten the proceedings and impose consequences for the mishap, the Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that Norfolk Southern, the operator of the train that derailed, cover all expenses linked directly to the incident’s cleanup.
“Norfolk Southern will not receive any leniency for the chaos they caused,” asserted EPA Administrator Michael Regan, emphasizing that the EPA would use its “complete enforcement powers” to guarantee adherence.

Personnel from Norfolk Southern will be obliged to partake in local gatherings, assist in purifying any tainted soil or water, and compensate the EPA for any assistance necessary throughout the operation. “While I understand this edict cannot erase the ordeal that families in this community have been going through, it will mark the commencement of a much-needed reckoning for the hardship caused by Norfolk Southern,” Regan remarked.
