Electricity Remains Unavailable for Numerous Austin, Texas Residents

It may take up to a week before power is completely reinstated.

During the weekend, Texas encountered a severe ice storm with strong winds and low temperatures. This storm resulted in both direct and indirect harm to power lines across the state, causing inhabitants to be without electricity in the freezing weather.

Especially in the capital of Austin, more than 150,000 residents lost their electricity. Repair teams from Austin Energy were dispatched over the weekend and have succeeded in reinstating a significant portion of the grid. Nonetheless, over 30,000 customers of Austin Energy are still lacking electricity and may remain so for at least another week.

“We are currently focusing on the most intricate & time-consuming repairs. Incoming gusts & rain will present further challenges,” Austin Energy conveyed in a tweet. “Considering the latest updates, we anticipate restoring power to nearly all remaining customers by Sunday, Feb. 12.”

Although the worst of the storm has passed, the city is still facing strong winds, which are hindering the repair of the power lines. In a worst-case scenario, more trees or branches might fall on already-fixed lines, further complicating the situation.

“I apologize for the prolonged duration of this process,” remarked Austin Energy General Manager Jackie Sargent during a press briefing on Sunday. She noted that due to the nature of the damage, the company is unlikely to offer reimbursements to customers for the period without electricity, although this issue is still being deliberated.
