Edgar Ramirez Chosen for Role in ‘Borderlands’ Film

Several movie adaptations of video game franchises have been underwhelming for me (Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog being exceptions), so I maintain some skepticism towards the notion of a Borderlands movie. As a player who has experienced all the games, Borderlands does not possess what I would term a “cohesive storyline,” thus crafting a two-hour movie from it appears somewhat imprudent. Nonetheless, the impressive ensemble cast may lead to an unexpected delight.

Eli Roth, the director of the Borderlands film adaptation, unveiled today that Legendary Pictures has enlisted Edgar Ramirez to portray Atlas in their production, a mogul, weapons manufacturer, and widely acknowledged as the most influential individual in the civilized galaxy. This seems perplexing as there is no character named “Atlas” in the games; however, the Atlas Corporation, which acted as an adversarial entity in the initial game, likely has some connection to him.

“Securing an actor of Edgar’s caliber, talent, and charm to star alongside Cate Blanchett and the remarkable ensemble is an immense privilege,” remarked Roth. “Atlas demands a genuinely enthralling presence, someone exuding charisma and allure with an underlying tinge of menace. I have been an admirer of Edgar’s work since his early days, and his evolution with each dramatic performance continues to astonish me. Our aim is to deliver something unconventional, exhilarating, and beyond anything audiences have previously witnessed from Edgar. I am incredibly enthusiastic to collaborate with him.”

Besides Ramirez, the remaining cast has already been finalized. Cate Blanchett will portray the enigmatic Siren, Lilith; Kevin Hart as the soldier of fortune, Roland; Jamie Lee Curtis as the eccentric scientist, Tannis; Ariana Greenblatt as the fiery Tiny Tina; Florian Munteanu as the somewhat civilized psycho, Krieg; and Jack Black as the famously irritating robot, Claptrap. GearBox CEO Randy Pitchford has also clarified that this film will be set in an alternate continuity from the games, hopefully addressing my previous concerns regarding the plot.
