Although Woody took the lead role in the 1995 film Toy Story and its follow-ups, the standout character was unquestionably Buzz Lightyear. Predictably, given Buzz’s popularity as a toy within the story, he became a significant revenue stream for Disney, not only through merchandise but also through his own animated series spin-off (which regrettably concluded prematurely, but let’s not dwell on that). Buzz remains a cornerstone of Disney’s array of beloved non-princess characters, and the time has arrived for him to headline his own movie.

Today, Disney and Pixar dropped the inaugural teaser for Lightyear, an upcoming film diving into the origins of Buzz Lightyear. Presumably, this would be the film that inspired Andy from Toy Story to desire the Buzz Lightyear action figure; however, as current information suggests, Lightyear will exist in a distinct story arc from the main Toy Story narrative.

Specifics regarding the plot are scarce, with the trailer offering fleeting glimpses of Buzz’s space odyssey and his encounters on distant planets with extraterrestrial beings, all set to the excellent sounds of David Bowie’s “Starman.” Interestingly, Chris Evans is set to portray Buzz instead of Tim Allen, who lent his voice to the character in all four Toy Story installments. Evans seems genuinely thrilled by the opportunity.

“Describing this as ‘a dream come true’ is an understatement; it’s truly a special moment,” Evans expressed in a statement. “Those close to me understand my profound admiration for animated movies. Being part of the Pixar family and collaborating with such incredibly talented storytellers who craft narratives unlike any other is surreal. Witnessing their creativity is pure magic. I’m genuinely grateful every day.”

Lightyear is set to hit theaters on June 17, 2022.
