In 1985, Doctor Emmet Brown built a time machine out of a DeLorean, saying that if you’re going to do such a thing, you might as well do it with some style. This, of course, was an iconic moment from the film Back to the Future, the movie that single-handedly turned the DeLorean Motor Company from a defunct producer of weird sports cars into an enduring pop culture icon. Sadly, the DMC had already gone defunct by the time the movie came out, due to concerns with the car’s construction and fuel viability (Mister Fusion hadn’t been invented yet), so the cars became very rare collectibles. That is, until now.
In a short promo that aired after the Super Bowl over the weekend, the newly-revived DeLorean Motor Company made an announcement many have waited a long time for: the DeLorean is making a comeback, and it’s happening this year. That’s not all, though; while it may not be powered by nuclear fission, this new DeLorean model will be entirely electric-powered.
The Future was never promised. Reimagine today.

The promo only showed a silhouette of the new vehicle, though its profile is unmistakable thanks to its signature gull-wing doors. The tags on the promo’s Twitter post suggest that, despite being an EV, the new DeLorean will still be considered a luxury vehicle, though what that actually means by today’s standards is anyone’s guess. Regardless, the DMC is shooting to release this new vehicle to the public by the end of 2022, and odds are good that, assuming the design is mostly faithful to the original, every Back to the Future fan will want one.
