Netflix employees recently participated in a walkout to express their discontent with comedian Dave Chappelle’s latest stand-up special, The Closer. Chappelle’s comments on transgender individuals specifically caused frustration among Netflix’s transgender and LGBTQ+ supporting staff.

According to TMZ, a representative of Chappelle expressed his willingness to have a respectful conversation with Netflix employees and the broader LGBTQ+ community. The representative reiterated a line from the special, stating, “Dave stands by his art: No more jokes about transgenders until we can all laugh together.”

“Dave is paying attention to the voices out there. Once there is openness from all sides, I believe communities will unite,” the representative added.

The organizer of the walkout, Ashlee Marie Preston, shared that she had attempted to initiate a dialogue with Chappelle’s team but received no response. In her statement to the press, she mentioned, “I tried to engage Dave Chappelle in a constructive conversation about the harm caused, but he opted out.” Chappelle’s representatives countered by stating that they had not been contacted by the protest group or Netflix representatives at any stage.

Various other celebrities, particularly comedians, have voiced their support for Chappelle, asserting that his comedy, while provocative, is not ill-intentioned.

“If this prompts a dialogue that helps people better understand each other, that would be fantastic,” former Daily Show host Jon Stewart commented to TMZ. “But I know he doesn’t intend to cause harm. That’s not who he is.”
