China Slowly Abolishing COVID Preventative Measures

Following widespread demonstrations, China is phasing out its zero-COVID strategies.

Over the past few weeks, significant protests emerged across China, specifically in its urban areas, as residents voiced their dissatisfaction with the strict zero-COVID approach. In response to these protests, China has started to reduce its anti-COVID restrictions. Testing sites for rapid antigen have been downsized or eliminated entirely, and the mobile travel tracking app, known as the “mobile itinerary card,” has been deactivated.

“It will be challenging to completely break the chain of transmission, regardless of the strength of prevention and control measures,” stated Chinese COVID specialist Zhong Nanshan in an interview published by the state.

Although the eased restrictions are a positive change, they have unfortunately led to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the nation. Around 8,626 cases have been documented as of Sunday, albeit lower than previous weeks. Local health authorities have expressed concerns that China’s healthcare infrastructure may not be equipped to handle a widespread outbreak of the virus.

Nevertheless, some individuals believe that given the current understanding and medical advancements, the virus can be effectively managed. “I think many people in rural China may have misconceptions about the virus, possibly influenced by the state’s exaggerated portrayal of the virus over the past two years. This might be one of the reasons behind the widespread fear,” mentioned Bob Li, a postgraduate student in Beijing, during an interview with CNN.
