CD Projekt Red Declines to Abandon ‘Cyberpunk 2077’
Full disclaimer: I was not among those who closely followed the evolution of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 until its convoluted journey. To be honest, I wasn’t even aware of its existence until Keanu Reeves graced the stage. Yet upon its release, I opted to purchase it, determined to give it a thorough evaluation. I navigated through the entire story campaign, facing various obstacles due to peculiar design choices and numerous glitches along the way. Upon completion, my conclusion was a simple “well, that was certainly a gaming experience,” after which I largely moved on. However, CDPR is resolute in ensuring their brainchild does not fade into obscurity without the recognition they feel it merits.
In a recent conversation with Reuters, CDPR executive Adam Kicinski asserted his and the company’s commitment to rectifying all the issues surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, aiming to transform it into the resounding success they always envisioned, with failure deemed non-negotiable. “I do not perceive shelving Cyberpunk 2077 as a viable option,” Kicinski affirmed. “We are confident in our ability to elevate the game to a level we can be proud of, securing successful sales for years to come.”

Despite the extensive time Cyberpunk 2077 has been available and the deployment of multiple updates by CDPR, both their rapport with the player community and their investors remains significantly strained. Sony, having withdrawn the game from the PlayStation Store and offering refunds, has yet to reinstate the PS4 version, potentially presenting complications for the ongoing development of the PS5 adaptation. Notably, the prolonged efforts dedicated to the game may, in themselves, give rise to quandaries, especially in light of controversies surrounding forced crunch periods endured by developers to meet deadlines. The future will unveil whether Cyberpunk 2077 will transcend its previous shortcomings gloriously, or if it will linger unresolved.
