Brave Ukrainian Canine Honored with Decoration

Amid the ongoing Russian incursion into Ukraine, the Ukrainian armed forces persist in their efforts to repel the advancing Russian soldiers. Regrettably, as the Russian troops retreat, they are leaving behind numerous landmines concealed in their path, creating perilous routes for both military personnel and civilians. Fortunately, the Ukrainian military deploys proficient bomb squads to detect and deactivate these explosive devices, and a particularly dedicated member of their team is a dog known as Patron.

Patron, whose designation signifies “ammunition” in Ukrainian, is a two-and-a-half-year-old terrier that has emerged as a symbol of the Ukrainian military and their defiance against the Russian invaders. Patron supports the military bomb squads by using his keen sense of smell to identify explosive materials and substances in the ground, ultimately facilitating the safe excavation and dismantling of the mines.

Since the onset of the Russian assault in February, Patron has contributed to the successful disabling of more than 200 explosive devices. In recognition of Patron and his caretaker, Mykhailo Iliev, for their exceptional service to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy presented them with commendation medals during a ceremony conducted in Kyiv.

“Today, my aim is to honor those Ukrainian champions who are actively decontaminating our territories of landmines,” Zelenskiy articulated in a statement subsequent to the ceremony. “Accompanied by our heroes is a remarkable little sapper – Patron – who not only assists in deactivating explosives but also educates our young ones on crucial safety protocols in areas threatened by landmines.”
