Beijing Races to Control Omicron Outbreak

Community-wide testing for the city’s 20 million inhabitants is in progress.

A brand-new wave of the Omicron variant COVID-19 emerged in China’s capital, Beijing, during the weekend, coinciding with the persistent lockdown in Shanghai. Although only 29 positive cases were identified yesterday, given China’s ongoing “zero-COVID” strategy, authorities are conducting tests on the entire population in an attempt to monitor and curb the virus as much as feasible, commencing in the Chaoyang district.

Spokesperson for the Beijing municipal government, Xu Hejian, stated, “The outbreak in Beijing is rapidly intensifying,” indicating that the pandemic containment efforts in Beijing have reached a crucial stage.

After the mass testing announcement in Chaoyang, residents rushed to purchase supplies, concerned about the likelihood of facing a similar extensive lockdown as the one in Shanghai. Numerous supermarkets extended their operating hours temporarily, with customers clearing the shelves of both perishable and nonperishable items. While shortages concern many residents, some are optimistic that neighboring cities are better equipped for prolonged lockdowns compared to Shanghai.

“My daughter works in a government department and they have made thorough preparations, including beds, blankets, and necessary items for women. Even if we have to undergo lockdown, we will manage fine,” shared 86-year-old Beijing resident Chen Shengzhen with USA Today.
