Addition of Permanent Hanukkah Lamp to White House Christmas Customs

Addition of Permanent Hanukkah Lamp to White House Christmas Customs

The token of Hanukkah will now be an official element of the White House’s holiday embellishments moving forward.

In previous times, former Presidents of the United States have been gifted symbols of Jewish celebrations by various notable Jewish religious leaders. Nevertheless, none of these symbols have evolved into a lasting part of the White House’s annual holiday ornamentation and festivities. This has now been officially altered starting this year.

This week, in honor of Hanukkah, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden conducted a ceremony revealing the inaugural official White House lamp. This nine-branched candle holder will become a lasting component of the White House’s holiday compilation, housed in the White House archives beyond the holiday period.

Aside from commemorating Hanukkah, the lamp serves as a significant declaration against the troubling surge of antisemitic rhetoric and hate-driven criminal activities across the United States in recent times.

“Unified, we must oppose the disturbing increase in antisemitism. And together, we must resist intolerance in any of its manifestations. Our democracy relies on it,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland articulated during the illuminating ceremony. “As a descendant of those who escaped persecution for being Jewish, it is particularly moving to be present here tonight as we light this lamp in our nation’s capital and under the safeguard of its laws.”
