21-Year-Old Chihuahua Named The Eldest Living Dog
Thanks to their remarkably sturdy immune systems, chihuahuas belong to the category of more long-living canine breeds, with the typical chihuahua lifespan usually falling between 12 and 18 years, varying based on their general health condition. However, a remarkable chihuahua residing in Florida has surpassed the average lifespan of its breed, stepping into the Guinness Book of World Records.
TobyKeith, the chihuahua, has been officially honored by Guinness as The Oldest Living Dog in the World, achieving the remarkable age of 21, born on January 9, 2001. For comparison, the eldest dog ever documented by Guinness was an Australian cattle dog that lived to the age of 29.
“People are amazed by how well he appears at his age,” shared TobyKeith’s guardian, Gisela Shore, with Guinness. She initially welcomed him from a shelter when he was a puppy, after he was handed over by an elderly couple who were no longer able to look after him.

Despite his advanced age, TobyKeith still maintains relatively good health, which Shore attributes to a nutritious diet, an active routine, fortuitous genetics, and genuine love and attention. Each day, TobyKeith enjoys a walk, a slice of turkey for a snack, some more time for frolicking, and then spends the remainder of his day relaxing by Shore’s side. TobyKeith has developed a minor heart condition in his later years, but according to Shore, it hasn’t significantly affected his way of life.
“The realization that my little companion has reached such a significant milestone is amazing! I am overjoyed,” she expressed.
